      Reviews:

      • Wine Enthusiast: This is a tight and firm wine that will take some time to develop. The fruit, an almost equal blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, is all present and will fill out over the next few years. It is a serious dense wine with great aging potential.
      • Jeff Leve: Fully developed, the wine is medium-bodied, round, fruity, and still holding an oaky edge on the nose and dark currant palate, this is not a wine to age.

      Producer Information

Château Cambon la Pelouse is a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionelle wine estate based in the Haut-Médoc commune of Macau, north of Bordeaux city and just south of Margaux. It is one of the oldest estates in the region with a history dating to the 17th Century and produces a number of red wine labels. It was acquired by Australian wine giant, Treasury Wine Estates (owners of the likes of Penfolds and Wolf Blass), in 2019. The château and its estate lies just a few hundred meters north of Fifth Growth estate, Château Cantemerle. Both lie to the southwest of Macau town, albeit not far from the southern limits of the Margaux appellation (Château Giscours sits just over two kilometers, or 1.2 miles, to the northwest of Cambon La Pelouse). The 35-hectare (86-acre) Cambon La Pelouse vineyard is planted to 50 percent Merlot, 45 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, and five percent Petit Verdot with vines averaging around 30 years old. The soils are composed of sandy gravel with rocks and stones. Grapes are hand and machine harvested, sorted twice, and undergo a so-called cold macerateration in stainless steel tanks for six to eight days prior to fermentation. The wines remain on skins for a total of around two to three weeks, including fermentation. The grand vin is barrel-matured for around 20 months in French oak before bottling, around half of which is new. Some 15,000 cases of Château Cambon la Pelouse are produced annually. The château produces a second wine, Château Trois Moulins, composed of roughly 50 percent Merlot, around 30 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 20 percent Cabernet Franc. The estate also owns a small, half-hectare (1.25 acre) plot in central Margaux and uses fruit from this parcel to produce a third label, L’Aura de Cambon, made from equal portions of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Prior to its acquisition by Treasury Wine Estates, the estate had been owned by Jean Pierre Marie since 1996.
