Engel Family Vineyards, founded in 1995 by life insurance salesman Ron Engel, is an ultra-small production, boutique estate tucked away along the historic St. Helena Highway in the heart of the Napa Valley AVA. The venture began when the family planted a modest 2.25 acres of vines surrounding their home, capturing a slice of premier, rocky hillside terroir despite having no formal background in the wine industry. Driven by Ron's deep personal passion for high school wrestling, the estate was uniquely envisioned as a philanthropic vehicle to raise operational funds for youth wrestling programs through wine donations. Lacking technical viticultural expertise at the start, the family leveraged a providential connection with critically acclaimed, 100-point winemaking legend Robert Foley (celebrated for his defining work at Pride Mountain Vineyards, Switchback Ridge, and Robert Foley Vineyards), who stepped in to craft their inaugural commercial release in 1999. Today, specializing in highly allocated, micro-lot allocations, the estate focuses almost exclusively on its signature Rock Mountain Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon—blended with a small touch of Merlot—yielding dense, hillside-driven reds framed by bold tannins and striking mineral character.
