It is known for its red wine based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, which has a reputation for robustness in its youth, but elegance and intense black fruit flavors after mid-term cellaring. The property has consistently been rated as a Cru Bourgeois. With 40 hectares (100 acres) under vine, Tour Saint-Bonnet is the largest property surrounding the village of Saint-Christoly. The vineyard is well situated on a gravel ridge close to the Gironde estuary, and is planted with 45 percent each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with the remainder planted to Petit Verdot and Malbec. In the winery, grapes are fermented in cement tanks. Barrel-aging takes place in larger oak foudres (rather than the more fashionable barriques) for around 18 months to achieve a more subtle oak character. After bottling, it will happily cellar for four to ten years.
