A much earthier set of aromas includes those of plum, black cherry and tea. There is markedly more volume to the richer and denser medium-bodied flavors that also exude a fine bead of minerality on the driving finish.

      Reviews:

      • Wine Advocate: The 2015 Volnay Vieilles Vignes comes from vines located just below the premier cru in a sunnier microclimate with clay-rich soils. It has an elegant bouquet with scents of blackberry leaf, cranberry, orange rind and a touch of wilted rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp and tensile tannin. There are tightly-wound, stony red berry fruit intermixed with orange rind and white pepper, the mouth tingling long after the wine has departed. Again, this is a strong and delicious offering from Thomas Bouley.
      • Vinous: (from deep red soil over mother rock just below Carelles Dessous, at the bottom of the slope, with the vines ranging from 45 to 70 years of age; essentially all destemmed): Bright, dark red-ruby. Redcurrant aroma along with a distinct fresh blood note from the iron-rich soil. At once dense and juicy, conveying a lovely inner-mouth floral quality and a light touch. Delivers very good definition and flavor intensity for village wine. There's a tiny-berry creaminess and generosity of texture here that's perfectly supported by a strong saline spine.

      Producer Information

Domaine Jean-Marc et Thomas Bouley is a wine producer based in the village of Volnay, in the CĂŽte de Beaune subregion of Burgundy's CĂŽte d'Or heartland. The estate produces a range of labels predominantly based on the local mainstay, Pinot Noir, but a number of other wines from neighboring appellations, as well as other grapes (Chardonnay and AligotĂ©), are also made. The Bouley's can trace their Burgundian winegrowing roots back to the 14th Century and the modern domaine is partly composed of holdings passed down via François Bouley and son Christian Bouley (Jean-Marc Bouley's father). Although Jean-Marc Bouley established his eponymous domaine in 1974, some of these family holdings came under his control ten years later. The estate now covers over eight hectares (21 acres) with vines predominantly in and around Volnay. Holdings include the premier cru Carelles, Les Caillerets, Clos-des-ChĂȘnes and En Lormeau as well as Les ReversĂ©es in Beaune and Pommard's FrĂ©miets and Rugiens. Village-level Volnay is also produced from plots including a holding in the Clos de la Cave immediately above the village. Since 2012, the domaine and its winemaking has been in the hands of Jean-Marc's son Thomas.
