• Wine Advocate: Previously reviewed from barrel in Issue 227, the 2015 Alte Reben Shiraz is now in bottle and looks fantastic. Pencil shavings, raspberries and thyme blossoms all appear on the nose, while the full-bodied palate delivers spicy complexity, ripe, creamy-textured tannins and terrific length. From a vineyard in Marananga planted in 1899, this is intense, supple and just downright great juice.

• James Suckling: An old-vine bottling from 1899 plantings. It delivers strong blackberries, mulberries, red plums, spiced earthy notes and crushed flowers. Ethereal. This has a soulful and profound appeal on the palate with a sleeve of dark, spice-dusted blackberry and blood-plum flavors. The power is effortless here.

Producer Information

Kaesler is an Australian wine producer, located in the Barossa Valley of South Australia. It has been producing premium quality, estate grown Shiraz from old vines for over 20 years. Kaesler produces a range of classic Barossa wines. The flagship of which is the Old Bastard, released to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the vineyard from which it is sourced. Other notable wines in the collection include the Alte Reben Shiraz and the WOMS which is a quintessential Australian blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. The Stonehorse collection is the entry-level range offered from Kaesler. It includes varietal Chardonnay, Touriga and Malbec. The estate is comprised of several vineyards in the Barossa, totalling around 37 hectares (92 acres) of vines. The Home vineyard, which surrounds the winery, is Kaesler's original vineyard and has sandy soils with a layer of clay which helps the vines in the hot, dry conditions. This vineyard has a small plot of vines planted in 1893 which are used to produce the Old Bastard Shiraz. A plot of Shiraz in a nearby vineyard planted in 1899 produces the Alte Reben Shiraz.
