      Detailed Description

The 2015 Castillo Labastida Reserva is a full-bodied, classically styled red wine made from Tempranillo grapes in Spain's Rioja Alavesa region.

      Producer Information

Bodegas Labastida (historically known as Unión de Cosecheros de Labastida and recently evolved into Bodega Manuel Quintano Labastida) is a historic, quality-oriented wine cooperative located in the Rioja Alavesa sub-region of Spain. Established in 1964 by a group of local grape growers seeking fair pricing, the cooperative has grown to include 80 members who collectively cultivate 300 hectares of pristine, high-altitude vineyards tucked between the Ebro River and the Sierra de Toloño mountain range. Following a challenging financial period after constructing a state-of-the-art facility in 2006, the Basque government stepped in to revitalize the operation in 2016 by appointing Iñigo Rubio—a native of the region and former Airbus executive—to restructure management. Under Rubio's leadership, alongside acclaimed head winemaker Javier Cereceda and veteran viticulturist César Castro, the producer underwent a profound, quality-driven transformation focused on low-intervention winification, spontaneous fermentation, and precise micro-zone harvesting. Their diverse portfolio is split across four distinct lines: the traditional "Solagüen" label, export-focused "Montebuena" and "Castillo Labastida" bottlings, and their top-tier "Manuel Quintano" range, which proudly honors the local 18th-century clergyman who originally pioneered Bordeaux-style oak aging techniques in Rioja.
