          Producer Information

Lyeth Estate is a California winery famous for Bordeaux-inspired blends, and for being an early adopter of the Meritage wine style. Cabernet Sauvignon is the predominant variety in its wines, but Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot are also used in smaller quantities. The winery is owned by the Boisset Collection, a major wine group and one of the largest producers in France. The company was founded in 1981 by Chip Lyeth, who was inspired to start a winery focusing on blends after visiting Bordeaux. At its establishment, varietally labeled wines were very popular in California, particularly those made from Cabernet Sauvignon. Lyeth's philosophy of producing blends similar to Bordeaux cuvées was a precursor to the Meritage style, and Lyeth was one of the founding members of the Meritage Alliance, established in 1988. Boisset bought Lyeth, its first US winery, in the 1990s following Chip Lyeth's death in an aeroplane crash. The winery's modern catalogue includes the Meritage blends as well as varietal wines from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec. Lyeth has also released small amounts of white wines, chiefly from Sauvignon Blanc in white Meritage blends, and from Chardonnay. Fruit is sourced from estate and grower vineyards, with most of the wines carrying either the Sonoma County or the California designation.
