Producer Information
Ronchi di Cialla, founded in 1970 by Paolo and Dina Rapuzzi and now masterfully operated by their entomologist-trained sons Ivan and Pierpaolo Rapuzzi, is a legendary family estate located in a secluded, highly biodiverse valley in the Friuli Colli Orientali region of northeastern Italy, just three miles from the Slovenian border. The estate is world-renowned for its strict, single-minded devotion to indigenous grape varieties; most notably, the Rapuzzis single-handedly saved the native Schioppettino grape from absolute extinction in the early 1970s, braving local bureaucratic bans to find the last 60 surviving vines and successfully petitioning for its legalization. Operating with an deeply ecological, "biodiversity-friendly" approach that embraces natural insect predators instead of pesticides, the family meticulously crafts structured, extraordinarily age-worthy wines that benefit from a distinct Mediterranean-influenced microclimate and limestone-heavy marl soils. Today, the winery sits at the absolute pinnacle of Friulian winemaking tradition, retaining the ultra-rare distinction of having their estate designated as a monopole subzone (the Cialla DOC), while producing revered flagships like their long-lived Schioppettino di Cialla and the wood-aged Ciallabianco white blend.
