Tenuta San Guido, a sprawling 2,500-hectare historical estate located in the coastal Maremma region of Bolgheri, Tuscany, is universally revered as the birthplace of the "Super Tuscan" revolution. The winery’s legendary narrative began in the 1940s when Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta noticed a striking geological similarity between the stony, gravelly soils of his estate and those of the Graves region in Bordeaux. Defying strict Italian winemaking traditions that mandated native grapes like Sangiovese, he boldly planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. After decades of producing the wine solely for private consumption, the landmark 1968 vintage of Sassicaia (meaning "place of many stones") was commercially released in 1971 to widespread international acclaim, effectively redefining Italy's standing in the global fine wine market. Today, managed by the third generation of the Incisa della Rocchetta family, the estate produces a tightly curated portfolio—including its secondary labels Guidalberto and Le Difese—and retains the singular distinction of holding Italy's only single-estate appellation, the Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC.
