      Reviews:

      • Wine Advocate: The 2016 Nicolás Catena Zapata has not been released, and they are going to sell the 2017 before it. This is the one wine, together with the Adrianna Vineyard Mundus Bacillus Terrae Malbec, that is sold through the négoce in Bordeaux for Europe and Asia. This is backward, serious and austere, with terrific balance and great length. This is a blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon from Gualtallary and 31% Malbec from Nicasia. There is also some 8% Cabernet Franc that seems to add a touch, and in 2016, it didn't need irrigation because there was enough rain. This seems to follow the style of the 2013, a little tight, perhaps because of the Cabernets.
      • James Suckling: This a rich and flavorful red, showing blackcurrants and tobacco. Full-bodied, soft and fruity with bright and spicy, oyster-shell and fresh-herb character. Serious cabernet blend.

      Producer Information

Bodega Catena Zapata is one of the foremost wine estates in Mendoza, Argentina. Founded in 1902 and still in family hands, it is particularly known for its rich, full-bodied red wines produced from Malbec. The estate is made up of six vineyards in the Luján de Cuyo, Tupungato and San Carlos sub-regions of Mendoza, at altitudes ranging from 3000 to 4750 feet (920 to 1450 meters) above sea level. The winery, with its striking Mayan-influenced pyramid shape, is located in Agrelo, in Luján de Cuyo. Catena make a wide range of wines under several different labels. The top tier is the Catena Zapata line, which includes four single vineyard wines from two different vineyards, Nicasia and Arianna, and the Malbec Argentino, which is produced from grapes selected from the best rows of each. The DV Catena and Saint Felicien lines are more for everyday drinking, and both feature varietal wines made from Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Catena also owns several other brands in Argentina. This includes the Alamos range, made from a mix of young-vine estate grapes and bought-in fruit from Luján de Cuyo and Valle de Uco, and Pasarisa, made from grapes from the Salta region.
