      Reviews:

      • Vinous: The 2016 Bouscaut has a very attractive bouquet of blackberry, bilberry, fresh mint, cigar box and light stony aromas; the new oak is nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. This feels velvety-smooth, leading into a caressing finish. I appreciate the discreet crescendo of this Pessac-Léognan. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting
      • James Suckling: The plum and currant aromas with crushed cement are persuasive. Medium body, attractive fruit, slightly fluid center palate and a medium finish. Needs one or two years to come together.

      Producer Information

Château Bouscaut is an estate in the Pessac-Léognan appellation situated on the left bank of the Garonne river. It was classified as Grand Cru Classé de Graves in 1959, for both its red and white wines. Les Chênes de Bouscaut is the label for the second wines. The Château Bouscaut grand vin is typically a blend of 65 percent Merlot, 20 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 15 percent Malbec. This wine is made from vines that are 35 years old on average, and are grown in a mixture of clayey-calcareous and gravel soils. In the winery, vinification is carried out in stainless steel tanks and the wine aged in 40 percent new oak barrels. Château Bouscaut's white wine is made from 60 percent Sauvignon Blanc and 40 percent Sémillon grapes. It fermented ferment with battonage and matured in oak barrels, around half of which are new. The estate was originally known as Haut Truchon, but by 1881 had taken the name Château Bouscaut. The vineyards date back to the 1600s and were expanded with the purchase of Château Valoux in 1929. The château was raised to the ground by fire in 1962, but the wine cellars were left unharmed. The owner, Victor Place, reconstructed the château according to its original architectural plans. In 1979, Bouscaut was bought by Lucien Lurton. He added Château Lamothe-Bouscaut and its adjoining 9-hectare (22-acre) vineyard site to the estate. Since 1992, Bouscaut has been managed by Lucien's daughter, Sophie Lurton. Extensive renovation work has been carried out under her supervision, including the construction of a large barrel cellar specifically designed for the estate's red wines. A range of environmentally friendly practices have been introduced.
