The 2017 Saggi is a Sangiovese based blend offering vibrant aromas and flavors of wild strawberries, red currants and black cherries with appealing notes of cinnamon and sweet spice. The flavors gain focus on the mid-palate with a layered richness, balanced acidity and polished tannins that carry the wine’s lengthy finish.

• Jeb Dunnuck: The 2017 Saggi checks in as 59% Sangiovese, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 17% Syrah that spent 18 months in 60% new oak. Its deep, saturated purple color isn't reminiscent of Sangiovese, yet it boasts rocking notes of jammy blackberries, raspberries, toasted spices, and dried flowers, with just a kiss of dried earth. Medium-bodied, with subtle oak, notable balance, and a great finish. it's another impeccably made wine by this estate that has loads to love.

• Wine Enthusiast: The aromas are light, with notes of cranberry, spice, sour cherry, leather and purple fruit. The palate is considerably more expressive, with full-bodied notes of cranberry, raspberry and cherry with a vibrant sense of acidity stitching them together.

Producer Information

Long Shadows Vintners is a Washington producer with a portfolio of locally-sourced wines produced by different international winemakers. Long Shadows was founded in 2003 by Allen Shoup and today, produces the popular regional varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Chardonnay and Syrah. Fruit is sourced from vineyards throughout the Columbia Valley AVA. The Benches vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills subregion is the only one owned by Long Shadows Vintners, through several of its investors as a long term source of fruit. The estate also leases vineyards located in the Yakima Valley, Wahluke Slope and Red Mountain viticultural areas. The different winemakers make seven labels under the Long Shadow title. The winemakers include Randy Dunn who has his own Napa Valley winery called Dunn Vineyards; John Duval who previously made wine for Penfolds; and the prominent consultant Michel Rolland, who makes the Pedestal Merlot. During the first few vintages the winemakers would all travel to the winery for harvest, but as Long Shadow has become established, several instruct the making of their wines from afar. Gilles Nicault runs the winery day-to-day and acts as the resident winemaker.
