2018 | Bernard Moreau | Chevalier Montrachet

It has a delightful bouquet of orange blossom, tinned peach and touches of wild mint, quite intense for a Village Cru. The palate is taut, fresh and spicy on the entry, with touches of white pepper and fennel infusing the citrus fruit. An almost clinical saline finish lingers in the mouth.

• Wine Advocate: Wafting from the glass with a lovely bouquet of citrus oil, orange blossom, white flowers and pastry cream, Moreau's 2018 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru is full-bodied, satiny and layered, with a deep and multidimensional core, lively acids and a long, chalky finish. Whereas the Bâtard is purchased as grapes, Alex Moreau received the Chevalier in must, and he's done a terrific job of the vinification and élevage.

• Vinous: The 2018 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru, which comprises three barrels this year, has an expressive bouquet of crushed stone mixed with Granny Smith apples and fleeting hints of white peach. The palate is supremely well balanced, delivering superb weight and penetration; the intense flavors of orange peel and sour lemon dovetail into discreet passion fruit and pawpaw notes toward the finish. Of course, there is outstanding mineralité throughout this Grand Cru. An awesome Chevalier-Montrachet.

Producer Information

Bernard Moreau is a viticulteur based in the village of Mancey, in the northernmost part of the Macon wine region. He has been in charge of his 8 hectare family domaine since 1982, when he took over from his father. The vineyards are planted with 40% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir, and 30% Gamay vines. The Bernard Moreau Bourgognes transcend their origins and are among the finest estate-bottled Burgundy values available. Moreau adheres to the principle of sustainable agriculture. He takes great care to ensure that his vines are in excellent health by constantly observing the vegetative cycle and the natural environment. His observations allow Moreau to take the minimal necessary measures and avoid synthetic chemical treatments. Moreau plants grass between rows and leaves vine cuttings on the soil as mulch in order to control erosion and enrich the microbiological vitality of the soil. He ferments with only native yeasts.
