Incredibly dark in color, the wine is full-bodied, rich, deep, sensuous and velvety. On the palate, the wine is packed with ripe, black and dark red pit fruits, licorice, chocolate, espresso and spice. Long, mouth-filling and supple ,with a velvety finish.

• Wine Advocate: Made of 100% Merlot, the 2018 Péby Faugères has a deep garnet-purple color and bombastic scents of plum preserves, baked black cherries, cedar chest and blueberry pie with an undercurrent of menthol, black olives, charcuterie and Indian spice, plus a waft of oolong tea. The seductively rich, full-bodied palate (15.5% alcohol) delivers mouth-coating black fruit preserves with a velvety texture and just enough freshness, finishing long and spicy yet with a touch of oak poking through. It will need a good 5 years in cellar for the oak to settle in, then drink it over the next 20 years or more.

• James Suckling: Wow. Really savory this year with an extremely dense and gorgeous palate of ripe fruit and ripe tannins, but an underlying minerality and intensity. Shows really integrated and melted tannins, but then it kick-starts at the end. Neoclassical.

Château Péby Faugères is a stand-alone vineyard in Saint-Émilion, located inside the larger Château Faugères property. The property – treated as distinct from Faugères – has been classified as a Grand Cru Classé since 2012, and is notable for its rich, opulent red wine made from Merlot. The 2005 vintage earned a 100-point rating from Robert Parker of The Wine Advocate in 2015. Until 1987, all the wine produced by Château Faugères was sold to a local negociant. In 1987, Pierre-Bernard (Péby) Guisez inherited the estate and began to focus on quality. In 1998, a wine was made from the best parcel of old vines in the vineyard to commemorate his passing. Today, Péby Faugères is considered to be the garage wine counterpart of Faugères. The Péby Faugères vineyard covers 7.5 hectares (18.5 acres) of clay-limestone soils and is planted entirely to Merlot. The wines are made at the modern winery that is shared with Faugères. After manual harvesting, the fruit is fermented partly in barrel and partly in wooden conical vats, and aged in new French oak barrels for 18 months. Around 12,000 bottles of the grand vin are released each year, and in some years the estate also makes a second wine, Le Merle de Péby Faugères. Since 2000, both Faugères and Péby Faugères have steadily grown in reputation. In 2005, both were purchased by Swiss businessman Silvio Denz, the owner of Lalique and a number of Bordeaux estates, including Sauternes' Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey.
