Farella Vineyard, originally established in 1977 by attorney Frank Farella, is a cornerstone estate widely considered synonymous with the identity of the Coombsville AVA in the southern Napa Valley. Nestled on western-facing slopes against the Vaca Mountains, the estate’s 26 acres of vines—initially planted in 1979—thrive on a unique combination of volcanic ash and gravelly loam soils that enjoy a cooler, maritime-influenced microclimate. Frank’s son, UC Davis graduate Tom Farella, took over winemaking in 1991 and became a pivotal figure in Napa history when he single-handedly authored the federal petition that officially designated Coombsville as Napa Valley's 16th sub-appellation in 2011. Celebrated for producing incredibly long-lived, European-style Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Merlot defined by bright acidity and savory mineral undertones, the winery entered an exciting new chapter in July 2026 by selling the historic estate to long-term partner Realm Cellars; under a thoughtful generational transition agreement, Tom Farella continues to fully operate his family's namesake label, leasing the on-site winery to craft Farella’s production from their beloved estate blocks.
