      Detailed Description

Clear, deep, pure, precise and flinty on the concentrated and piquant apricot nose with aromas of broken gneiss.

        Reviews:

        • Wine Advocate: Picked between October 5 and 31, the 2018 Ried Singerriedel Riesling Smaragd is clear, deep, pure, precise and flinty on the concentrated and piquant apricot nose with aromas of broken gneiss. Lush and round on the palate, this is a very elegant and balanced Singerriedel with immensely fine and juicy fruit, very fine tannins and great finesse. The acidity is ripe and refined and perfectly integrated and delivers persistent and stimulating salinity. A gorgeous Riesling and perhaps the finest 2018 I tasted in Austria last year. Tasted at the domain in September 2019.
        • James Suckling: Stunning depth, but also purity to this complex riesling that is bursting with life. Cascades of honeysuckle, melon and prosciutto, green mangoes, riper papaya, crushed gunpowder and asphalt. Dense layers of peaches and citrus fruit ride the creases of the palate, filling every corner in bright colors of flavor and acidity. Long, structured and focussed.

        Producer Information

Weingut Franz Hirtzberger is an Austrian wine estate producing white wines from Grüner Veltliner and Riesling in the Wachau region. In its strong portfolio, it is particularly known for its top-level Smaragd-designated wines, including the flagship Honivogl Grüner Veltliner and the Singerriedel Riesling, which is one of Austria's most highly regarded Riesling wines. The estate is located in Spitz in the far west of the region – an area influenced by cold winds blowing off the mountains to the north. The estate covers 15 hectares (37 acres) of vineyards, which are split between Riesling and Grüner Veltliner, with smaller amounts planted to Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay. The Singerriedel vineyard is the most important of these holdings, and is located on steep, southeast-facing slopes. The Honivogl Grüner Veltliner is sourced from a rocky plot at the bottom. All of the wines are fermented in stainless steel and aged in classic 3000-5000-liter wooden vats.
