Mount Langi Ghiran, meaning "home of the yellow-tailed black cockatoo" in the local Aboriginal language, is a historic and highly revered pioneer of cool-climate viticulture nestled in the remote, dramatic cliffs of the Grampians region in Western Victoria, Australia. Originally established in 1969 by the Italian immigrant Fratin brothers—who sought to recreate a slice of Veneto by sourcing rare, pre-phylloxera "Swiss clone" Shiraz cuttings—the estate truly rose to global fame under legendary winemaker Trevor Mast, who took the winemaking helm in the late 1970s and eventually bought the property in 1987. The vineyard sits in a unique north-south valley sheltered by towering granite peaks and cooled by icy winds from the Southern Ocean, forcing one of the longest, slowest ripening seasons in the country. Now under the family ownership of the Rathbone family and guided by chief winemaker Adam Louder—who began his career there as a cellar hand under Mast—the estate's portfolio is anchored by its legendary, multi-decade-aging "Langi" Old Block Shiraz, a wine globally celebrated for establishing Australia's blueprint for savory, profoundly aromatic, and intensely peppery cool-climate Shiraz.
