Jumilla's hot, dry, continental climate, and the dry limestone soils in the Juan Gil vineyards are an excellent terroir for Monastrell, which has formed the basis for the region's full-bodied red wines for decades. Monastrell predominates here, and some of the older vines are around 40 years old, providing a complexity not seen in wines made from younger vines. Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon are also planted in the vineyard and are sometimes used as minor blending partners.
