        Reviews:

        • Wine Advocate: Offering up aromas of pear, melon, white flowers and nutmeg, the 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Encégnières is medium to full-bodied, satiny and gourmand, with a fleshy core of fruit underpinned by bright acids that temper its generosity of fruit.
        • Burghound: Pretty aromas of acacia blossom enjoy added breadth from ripe white orchard fruit and discreet citrus nuances. The beautifully textured, fleshy and round medium-bodied flavors possess excellent density and particularly so for a villages-level wine, all wrapped in a saline, palate coating and long finish. This is impressive for its level and very much recommended.

        Producer Information

Domaine Jean-Claude Bachelet et Fils is a well-regarded wine producer based in the town of Saint-Aubin in the Côte de Beaune region of Burgundy. It produces a range of wines, predominantly Chardonnay, from fruit in Saint-Aubin and neighboring Puligny and Chassagne-Montrachet, including a plot in the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru site. The eponymous Jean-Claude Bachelet established the domaine name in the 1970s although the family has winemaking history dating back to the 17th Century. According to Burgundy guru Jasper Morris MW, the family is also related to Michelle Bachelet, the president of Chile from 2006 to 2010. Jean-Claude's sons Jean-Baptiste and Benoit progressively took over the running of the domaine in the early 2000s and the cellars were rennovated in 2010. In all, the domaine boasts around 10 hectares (25 acres) of vineyard, all converted to biodynamics from 2012. As well as 0.1 hectares (a quarter acre) in the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, additional holdings in Chassagne include the premiers crus Blanchot Dessus, La Boudriotte (red and white), Les Macherelles, Sous le Puits in Puligny and an additional three hectares (7.5 acres) of Chassagne and Puligny villages-level plots. Roughly 40 percent of holdings remain around the winery (based in the hamlet of Gamay, immediately northwest of Saint-Aubin). These include the premiers crus La Chatèniere, Charmois, Murgers des Dents de Chien, Les Champlots and the red, Pinot Noir-based, Derrière la Tour site. The winemaking philosophy is low-input with indigenous yeast ferments and relatively low levels of new oak. Wines are blended and bottled after roughly 18 months in oak.
