              Producer Information

Varner Wine produces a terroir-driven wine portfolio of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz counties in California. Further Chardonnay and red wines from Central Coast vineyards are bottled under the estate's Foxglove label. Proprietors, vintners, and winemakers Bob and Jim Varner began planting vines at their estate vineyard in 1980, but it was not until 1996 that they began selling their own wine commercially. Varner is best known for its top quality Chardonnays from the Spring Ridge Vineyard. The estate's wine portfolio is composed of four Chardonnays and four Pinot Noirs from specific blocks on the Varner brothers' 5.7 hectares (14 acres) of vineyard land in the Santa Cruz Mountains, located 10 miles (16km) from the Pacific Ocean. Chardonnays are labeled by block: Bee Block, Amphitheater Block, and Home Block, as are Pinot Noirs: Picnic Block, Hidden Block, and Upper Picnic Block. Grapes that do not reach top quality standards for the Varner label go into wines under the label Neely. Vines from the blocks at Spring Ridge Vineyard are mostly own-rooted and dry-farmed organically. Vinification is kept simple and always the same so as to express terroir differences between blocks. Grapes are hand-picked and fermented with indigenous yeasts in around 40 percent new French oak barrels. Quite the opposite of Varner, the Foxglove label produces around 25,000 cases annually of value-driven wine including a Chardonnay from the Central Coast and Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel from Paso Robles.
