Detailed Description
Detailed Description
A serious, concentrated and expressive wine, Vavasour Sauvignon Blanc flaunts a powerful bouquet of fresh herbs, tropical fruits and bright citrus. Ripe stone fruit flavors and a distinct minerality hold up well to rich, spicy foods.
Reviews:
- Wine Enthusiast: Still a baby, this Sauvignon, from the comparatively cooler climes of the Awatere Valley, needs some time for the onion and struck match reductive notes to blow off. When they do, ripe guava, passion fruit and grass take their place. There's a zing of lime zest on the palate, and a short, peach fuzz finish.
- Wine Spectator: A mouthwatering mix of lime, ruby grapefruit and fresh lemongrass flavors mark this version, with hints of thyme and sea salt popping on the long finish.
Producer Information
Vavasour Winery is a Marlborough wine producer in New Zealand's South Island. It was established by Peter and Anna Vavasour in the mid-1980s in the Awatere Valley, and makes wines from the classic regional varieties – Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with a focus on Sauvignon Blanc. The estate released its inaugural vintage in 1989, making it one of the first commercial wineries in the Awatere Valley, just east of the already-established Wairau Valley. The cool, windy climate and the deep, gravelly soils are perfect for growing intense, aromatic Sauvignon Blanc, Vavasour's flagship variety. Vavasour uses grapes from both its own vineyard and from grower vineyards in the region. The Vavasour family has a particularly strong place in the New Zealand wine industry. Peter and Anna's son Louis established the Awatere River Wine Company in the late 2000s, while Anna's aunt and uncle Judy and Garry Glazebrook were founders of Hawke's Bay wine brand Ngatarawa. Vavasour is now owned by the Foley Family Wines company.
