      Detailed Description

The 2022 Clusel-Roch Côte-Rôtie "Les Grandes Places" is a deeply structured, elegant Northern Rhône red crafted from pre-WWII heritage Serine vines.

      Producer Information

Domaine Clusel-Roch is an elite, multi-generational family estate located in Verenay, the northernmost village of Côte-Rôtie within France’s Northern Rhône Valley, celebrated as a pioneering force for organic viticulture on the region's near-vertical terraces. The estate’s roots trace back to 1935 when Baptiste and Marguerite Clusel planted Les Grandes-Places using Serine, an ancient, low-yielding regional clone of Syrah revered for its complex aromatic potential. René and Joséphine Clusel bottled the family's first wines in 1969, but the modern identity of the estate was forged in 1989 when their son Gilbert Clusel and his wife Brigitte Roch combined their names to form Domaine Clusel-Roch, shifting the property entirely toward elite wine production and securing organic certification by 2002. Today, fourth-generation winemaker Guillaume Clusel masterfully directs the expanding 14-to-18-hectare estate, which includes historical plots in Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu alongside organically farmed Gamay and Aligoté parcels in the Coteaux du Lyonnais. Because the vineyards sit on terrifyingly steep slopes of decomposed mica-schist and iron-rich arzels, farming requires manual plowing, digging, and anchoring vines to double wooden stakes to withstand the fierce Mistral winds. In the gravity-fed cellar, the winemaking philosophy relies on minimal intervention, practicing partial destemming, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous wild yeasts, and precise aging for up to two years in large, neutral Burgundy oak barrels with a maximum of 20% new oak. The resulting highly allocated portfolio is headlined by their single-vineyard masterpieces—including the legendary Les Grandes Places (still crafted from the pre-WWII Serine vines) and the mineral-driven La Viallière—alongside their approachable Les Schistes cuvée, all yielding an incredibly pure, chiseled Northern Rhône style that flawlessly balances structural power, dark fruit, and peppery, floral complexity.
