        Producer Information

Weingut von Winning is a wine producer based in the town of Deidesheim in the Pfalz region of western Germany. It is a founding member of the VDP (the Verband Deutscher Prädikats – an association of Germany's top wine producers) and produces a range of wines made from Riesling from premium vineyards in the villages of Ruppertsberg, Deidesheim and Forst. The estate was founded in 1849 by Dr. Andreas Deinhard. His son-in-law, Leopold von Winning, took control of the estate in 1907, and raised the quality and profile of the wines. The estate changed ownership in 1918 (its name became Weingut Dr. Deinhard) and it was not until 2009 that the estate's former name was restored. Today, wines are made under both the Von Winning and Dr. Deinhard labels. Weingut von Winning holds around 64 hectares (158 acres) of vineyard land, 85 percent of which is planted to Riesling. The estate's classified Grosses Gewächs sites include: Kirchenstück, Jesuitengarten and Pechstein in Forst; Kalkofen, Langenmorgen and Kieselberg in Deidesheim; and Spiess in Ruppertsberg. The most famous of these, Kirchenstück, is surrounded by a sandstone wall which retains heat during the day, releasing warmth to the vines at night. The site is located on a gentle slope composed of sandy loam and clay over sandstone, limestone and basalt. The estate's vineyards also cover small amounts of other varieties including Gewürztraminer, Portugieser, Sauvignon Blanc, Scheurebe, Dornfelder, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Von Winning ferments its Grosses Gewächs wines with indigenous yeasts in oak barrels of different sizes. The wines are left on lees until bottling and are not fined and rarely filtered. One of Weingut Von Winning's top wines comes from 50-year-old Riesling vines grown in chalky, volcanic and sandstone soils at Forster Jesuitengarten. A single wooden barrel of this Riesling is produced annually.
