      Detailed Description

The 2023 Château Montrose is a magnificent, powerful yet remarkably precise Left Bank Bordeaux from Saint-Estèphe, crafted from an elite core of historic gravel terraces.

      Producer Information

Château Montrose is an iconic, world-renowned wine estate located in the northernmost communal appellation of Bordeaux’s Left Bank, Saint-Estèphe, officially classified as a Second Growth in the historic 1855 Médoc Classification but widely revered for achieving the powerhouse quality and structure of a First Growth. Founded in 1815 by Étienne Théodore Dumoulin, who cleared a heather-covered hillside that bloomed with pink flowers—giving the estate its name, "Mont Rose"—the property has been championed since 2006 by the billionaire industrialist Bouygues brothers (Martin and Olivier). The estate spans 130 hectares total, featuring a highly unusual, single contiguous block of 95 hectares under vine beautifully positioned on the deep gravel-and-clay terraces (specifically Terrace No. 4) overlooking the wide Gironde estuary, which creates a protective, temperature-moderating microclimate. Planted heavily to Cabernet Sauvignon (around 63%), alongside Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, the vineyard has been farmed completely organically since 2019. Under the technical direction of Vincent Decup, the grapes flow through a state-of-the-art, eco-renovated gravity-fed vat room boasting 93 temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for microscopic, parcel-by-parcel vinification. The legendary grand vin is aged for 18 months in 60% new French oak barrels, yielding an incredibly intense, deeply concentrated, and initially austere style that evolves over decades into a majestic, complex symphony of black fruit, graphite, cedar, and velvety power.
