Producer Information
Weingut Wittmann is a legendary, family-operated wine estate based in the village of Westhofen within Germany’s southern Rheinhessen region, celebrated as a crucial driving force behind the historic "Rheinhessen renaissance" and a global pioneer in sustainable viticulture. With family winemaking roots in Westhofen dating back to 1663, the property has been brilliantly guided since the early 2000s by 15th-generation winemaker Philipp Wittmann and his wife Eva Clüsserath-Wittmann, who manage roughly 28 to 30 hectares of premium vines. The estate is universally revered for its environmental leadership, having transitioned entirely to organic farming in 1990 under Philipp's parents before achieving full Respekt-BIODYN biodynamic certification in 2004—a meticulous approach that fosters living, balanced limestone soils and yields exceptionally thick-skinned, concentrated grapes. A premier member of the prestigious VDP since 1998, Wittmann's global reputation is anchored by an elite quartet of limestone-rich Grand Cru (VDP.Grosse Lage) sites surrounding Westhofen: the warm Aulerde, the amphitheater-shaped Kirchspiel, the elevated Brunnenhäuschen, and the legendary, highly coveted Morstein vineyard, which routinely produces some of the most profound and collectible dry Rieslings in the world. In their deep, historic 1829 stone-vaulted underground cellar, the winemaking is fiercely minimalist and gravity-fed: grapes are softly pressed, and the must undergoes slow, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous wild yeasts before aging on the lees for nearly a year in traditional large oak fuder casks. Though the estate also turns out world-class, complex Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Silvaner, it is their dry (trocken) Rieslings—defined by a pure, austere, bracingly energetic house style packed with chalky salinity, crystalline precision, and immense aging potential—that stand as benchmarks for modern German wine craftsmanship.
