Whiskey: Ardbeg 17 Year Old - Signed Auction Single Malt Scotch

A tad less peaty than early bottlings, the classic Ardbeg 17 Year Old is still a great whisky, but is sadly becoming very thin on the ground as demand increases and supply runs low - it's now a good few years since owners Glenmorangie discontinued it. The first bottling of this sparked the revival of Ardbeg's fortunes after the takeover by Glenmorangie.

Detailed Description

This Islay single malt was released shortly after the Ardbeg distillery was taken over and reopened by Glenmorangie in the late 1990s. Aged for a minimum of 17 years, this expression revived interest in the distillery with a rich and powerful, but slightly less peaty profile than other early bottlings. This bottle is signed by Stuart Thomson, the distillery manager from 1997 to 2006.

Ardbeg 17 Year Old - Signed Auction Single Malt Scotch Whisky Tasting Notes

Nose: The gentlest of peats, yet deep and confident with an enticing sweetness – a heady mixture of malts and vanillins. Vaguely salty and very complex with the oak present but very much in harness. Just a hint of bourbon and an even fainter hint of tangy orange to widen the spectrum.

Palate: There is a much greater presence of peat in the taste than the nose suggests. The smokiness quickly hits the palate and then tapers off. That said, the middle shows an excellent ‘chewy’ malt along side a touch of cocoa.

Finish: The peat returns and guarantees an enormously long finale. The taste of the malt clings on and hints of liquorice and dry toast are detected. This form of oakiness continues but never becomes sappy or too dry as the peat balances this out beautifully.

Distillery Information

Ardbeg Distillery, which is situated on the southern coast of Islay, was founded in 1815 by the MacDougall family. Once the peated barley arrives at the distillery, it is milled and mashed with water sourced from Loch Uigeadail, which is situated approximately 3 miles away from the distillery.
