Detailed Description
Detailed Description
A rare 28-year-old Auchentoshan distilled in 1998 and bottled by Thompson Bros in 2026. Matured across two first-fill wine barriques, this release combines Auchentoshan's famously delicate, triple-distilled Lowland character with deep fruit, chocolate and vinous complexity. Sweet grains, cranberry granola and chocolate develop alongside flaky cherry Danish, bright Beaujolais-like fruit and mandarin peel. On the palate, crisp wine acidity and nutty oxidised red-wine notes are balanced by bergamot, pomelo and resinous herbal complexity, creating an unusually structured and savoury mature Lowland single malt. Only 379 bottles were produced.
Auchentoshan Thompson Bros 28 Year Old · 1998 Vintage Single Malt Scotch Whisky | 700ML Tasting Notes
Nose: Sweet grains and chocolate, with chewy breakfast bars, cranberry granola and trail mix. Flaky cherry Danish, bright red-wine fruit, mandarin peel and a subtle hoppy Citra ale note add further complexity.
Palate: Complex and structured, opening with crisp wine acidity and the nutty depth of oxidised red wine. Bergamot-forward Earl Grey tea, bitter pomelo and dried-fruit trail mix lead into pine resin and bittersweet herbal liqueurs.
Finish: Medium to long, becoming increasingly dry and savoury as the sweetness fades. Warming fenugreek, dried oregano and slightly charred oats linger with a textured, gently herbal finish.
Distillery Information
Auchentoshan was officially established in 1823, with earlier roots at Duntocher on the western edge of Glasgow. It became one of the few surviving Lowland malt distilleries in the late 20th century, passing through several owners before Eadie Cairns rebuilt the site after acquiring it in 1969. Stanley P. Morrison bought Auchentoshan in 1984, and Suntory acquired Morrison Bowmore in 1994.
