Nose: Aromas of thick peat smoke rise with briny sea air and iodine, carried on a mineral, salty tang. Fresh citrus zest—lemon and lime—lifts the profile, while vanilla and light oak lend warmth and a touch of sweetness that threads through the maritime depth.

Palate: Powerful coastal peat greets the palate—briny smoke, iodine, and mineral salt with a stony sea-spray lift. Vanilla and citrus peel weave through toasted oak, while a subtle sweetness threads a caramel-tinged undercurrent. Long, warming finish of smoke, pepper, and salt.

Finish: Long, maritime finish with Caol Ila peat and sea-salt iodine lingering like salt spray on the tongue. Subtle citrus zest and vanilla sweetness surface, then a peppery, refined fade that dissolves into a soft, smoky afterglow.

Distillery Information

Caol Ila was founded in 1846 by Hector Henderson near Port Askaig on Islay’s east coast, overlooking the Sound of Islay between Islay and Jura. Its Gaelic name refers to that stretch of water, and the site was chosen with access to sea transport and a water supply from Loch nam Ban. Ownership changed early, passing to Norman Buchanan in 1854 and then to Bulloch Lade & Co in 1863.
