An exceptionally rare 28-year-old Caroni, distilled in 1997 and bottled in 2026 by Berry Bros & Rudd for its The Auld And The Bold collection. Drawn from single cask #879, this Heavy Trinidad Rum was matured in an ex-bourbon barrel and bottled at its natural cask strength of 58.3% ABV. The profile is unmistakably Caroni, combining scorched tropical fruit, dark demerara sugar and burnt caramel with the distillery's celebrated industrial character of tar, rubber, oil and smoke. After nearly three decades of maturation, the spirit has developed remarkable depth while retaining its powerful, oily and distinctive personality. Only 130 bottles were produced from this exceptional single cask.

Nose: Dark demerara sugar and scorched mango, followed by ripe papaya and charred pineapple. Classic notes of tar, warm rubber and industrial oil emerge alongside honeycomb, smouldering caramel, leather, menthol and espresso.

Palate: Heavy, oily and intensely concentrated, with barbecued tropical fruit, burnt sugar and dark caramel. Molasses, dates, tobacco leaf and old leather develop alongside dark chocolate, roasted almonds, ripe banana, tar and deep sooty smokiness.

Finish: Exceptionally long, dry and warming, with charred tropical fruit, dark caramel, warm rubber and persistent tarry notes. Clove, tobacco, pepper and mature spicy oak continue long after the sweeter fruit notes fade.

Distillery Information

Caroni Distillery was established in Trinidad in 1918 and became one of the Caribbean's most distinctive rum producers, creating heavy molasses-based rums with an unmistakably oily, smoky and industrial character. The distillery used both pot and column stills and was closely connected to Trinidad's sugar industry before closing in 2003. Its remaining stocks subsequently became highly sought after, transforming Caroni into one of the world's most collectible closed distilleries. Berry Bros & Rudd, founded in London in 1698, is Britain's oldest wine and spirits merchant and one of the industry's most historic independent bottlers. Through its The Auld And The Bold collection, the company continues to select rare and distinctive casks, with this surviving Caroni representing a remarkable piece of Trinidadian rum history.
