Kanosuke Japanese Single Malt Whisky is a distinctive expression from Kagoshima, Japan, combining traditional whisky craftsmanship with the distillery's heritage in shochu production. Made using malted barley and distilled in three copper pot stills of different shapes, the whisky brings together spirits matured in re-charred American white oak casks previously used for ageing shochu, alongside whisky from other cask types. This maturation develops a rich, mellow character featuring honeyed sweetness, ripe banana, caramel, and citrus, complemented by Japanese cinnamon, ginger, and lightly smoky nuts. Bottled without chill filtration, it offers a rounded texture and an elegant balance of sweetness, spice, and gentle bitterness.

Nose: Honey, ripe banana, lemon tea, and caramel, accompanied by sweet malt and delicate oak.

Palate: Candied quince and honey unfold alongside Japanese cinnamon, warming ginger, and creamy caramel. Lightly smoked nuts and subtle oak spice add depth, balancing the whisky's mellow fruit sweetness.

Finish: Smooth and lingering, with honeyed sweetness, gentle spice, toasted nuts, and an elegant bittersweet oak character.

Distillery Information

Kanosuke Distillery is located in Hioki, Kagoshima Prefecture, on the southwestern coast of Japan. Established in 2017 by Komasa Jyozo, a family business with a long history of shochu production, the distillery draws on generations of experience in fermentation and barrel maturation. Its heritage is closely connected to Mellowed Kozuru, an oak-aged rice shochu introduced in 1957, which helped establish the family's expertise in wood ageing. The distillery uses three copper pot stills of different shapes and a traditional worm-tub condenser to develop a range of spirit characteristics. Combining Japanese craftsmanship, coastal maturation conditions, and innovative production techniques, Kanosuke has established a distinctive identity in the modern Japanese whisky industry.
