Distillery Information

Laphroaig is a Scotch Whisky distillery on the western Scottish island of Islay and one of the best known of all the single malts. It is marketed as "the most richly flavored of all Scotch whiskies" and is known for its powerful peaty aromas. It is the only whisky to carry the Royal Warrant of the Prince of Wales, which was awarded in 1994. The distillery's history begins in 1815. Donald and Alexander Johnston had leased 1000 acres (250 hectares) from the laird of Islay a few years earlier to raise cattle, and planted barley for feed. By 1815 – on the official founding of the distillery – the pair had gained a reputation for the whisky made from their surplus crop, using a local water source low in minerals but soft and peaty. It had soon become more profitable to distill whisky. The neighboring Lagavulin distillery played a prominent role in Laphroaig's history during the 19th Century. By the 1880s Lagavulin's owners were buying around half of production of Laphroaig for their blended whisky. The Johnston family decided to end this relationship in order fully develop their own brand. This led to Mackie & Co (the then owners of Lagavulin) taking them to court, making several attempts to buy Laphroaig, poaching staff, copying stills, trying to obtain recipes, and even blocking Laphroaig's water supply The business remained independently owned and operated until the 1960s when it was sold to Long John International. In 2011 it was bought by Beam Inc. which became part of Beam Suntory in 2014. The core 10-year-old expression is one of the fastest sellers in the category. The wider portfolio includes regular releases up to 25 years old, plus expressions without age featuring a range of wood treatments. Cairdeas ("Friendship") is an annual limited edition release where the production methods and wood profile varies. As is typical in the industry, several further expressions are limited to the travel retail market.
