Detailed Description

This single cask release from New Zealand’s Thomson Distillery was distilled from 100% New Zealand barley, smoked with native manuka wood, and matured in a bourbon cask. It’s smoky whisky — but not as you know it. Instead of peat, the manuka smoke gives the spirit a resinous, peppery, and deeply herbal edge, balanced by citrus sweetness and bright tropical fruit. Only 270 bottles exist, bottled at a robust 50.8% ABV, making this a rare glimpse into New Zealand’s most distinctive style of single malt.

Thomson Whisky New Zealand Single Malt (Bourbon Cask) 2019 - The Heart Cut #18 | 500ML Tasting Notes

Nose: Charred wood, lemon sherbet, and pineapple chews, with a wisp of honeyed smoke.

Palate: Oily and resinous, with manuka spice, barley sugar, and nectarine brightness.

Finish: Long and smoky, with pepper, clove, and a hint of sweet citrus peel.

Distillery Information

The Heart Cut was launched in 2023 by drinks industry veteran Georgie Bell in partnership with her husband, former bartender Fabrizio Leoni. Noting that there are plenty of indie bottlers out there already who specialise in Scotch, the brand's approach is to offer more diversity, releasing whiskies sourced from different countries across the globe. The Heart Cut aims to put the spotlight on some not so well-known distilleries and provide an accessible way into a potentially confusing category. The idea is to provide: “guidance for the curious whisky drinker”, “we want people to buy from us and then from the distillery”, Bell explains.
